Company Profile - History

Cox & Company Limited, began as a determination of a woman Hettie Cox Beaubrun who strived for success behind the confines of her home with very limited resources. This began in the dark days of 1926 but she had the full support of her husband Clive Anthony Beaubrun.

Cox & company today, represents one of the very few old remaining businesses. The fire in 1927 did not dampen the spirits of the Beaubruns. Three years later in 1930 the company went into the oil and steam business as Agents for Esso Standard Oil and Stockard Steamship Corporation. During the 2nd World War, Cox & Company Ltd. had much to do with the airport refueling of aircraft at Beane Field now called Hewanorra Airport in Vieux Fort the south of the island.

Twelve years later Cox & Company Ltd. experienced its first real tragedy. The 1948 Castries first burnt out the business as it did so many others at the time. Despite this tragedy Cox & Company Ltd. progressed. The business relocated on Jeremie Street and remained there for a over a decade until it was relocated in 1961 to the William Peter Boulevard.

In 1955 the company made further progress and became agents for the Shipping Line Costa Line of Italy. They were agents also for popular passenger ships, which called in St. Lucia for the monthly picking up of St. Lucians, bound to seek their fortune in Britain.

The company has set a record in a variety of services, which it has been able to offer
St. Lucians as import and exports merchants steamship agents, insurance agents, commission and estates agents, textiles men's, women's and children wear, millinery fancy goods, haberdashery lines, toys, stationery. The company have been in retail businesses specializing in china, crystal, cosmetics, jewellerly, groceries, liqueurs and non-alcoholic beverages.

Its area of business has changed with the times as the company adapts to the changing environment. Today the company is run by the 3rd generation and has a compliment of 93 full time staff and 60 part time. Cox & Company has diversified into: Cruise Shipping, Tourism, Distribution, Ferry Service between the French islands, Dominica and Les Saintes, Videography, and Destination Management. The company also has associated companies. Tropical Adventures Ltd. and St. Lucia Bay Rum Company Ltd.
